Basic Understanding of the Sacral Chakra

Continuing on from the last post focusing on the Root or Base Chakra, let’s take a closer look at the Sacral Chakra and its associated emotions and possible symptoms of imbalances.

Sacral Chakra

(located just below the naval and with openings to the front and back)

No chakra functions completely independently of another, so the same basic emotional event can have an effect on more than one chakra energy centre, but each chakra will process slightly different parts of that emotion – for instance, fear of something can combine anger about a situation and love if it concerns someone close to you. The chakras govern our emotions, and in turn our emotions also affect our physical body which responds by producing hormones that react to the way we feel, emotionally and physically.

There appears to be a link between the chakras in our energy body and the glands of our endocrine system which produce hormones to keep our physical bodies in balance. They may also be connected to the major nerve plexus throughout the body which act as the messengers to the brain. There is a great deal to learn and understand about all the connections between our physical and energy body.

The more we pay attention to the feelings in our body, the more we realise that our emotions are not all experienced in our brain. The link between our brain and gut via the Vagus Nerve is already well known, and our gut health is an important factor to our well-being in every aspect.

The location of the sacral energy centre in the middle of our lower tummy is a major site of discomfort for us at times. Think about how often we might use these phrases linked to our ‘feelings’:

·        Gut instinct when we get a funny feeling that something is either good or bad

·        Sick to the stomach when an emotion literally makes us feel ‘sick’

·        Butterflies in the tummy when we are excited or nervous

·        Sinking feeling in the pit of the stomach when something is really disappointing or we are let

down badly.

There are real physiological functions going on in our bodies to cause these physical feelings, but remember that feelings and emotions are energetic information that come from our thoughts. So they are processed by the energetic organs of our body. A thought cannot be seen, but we feel the effect of it, the chakras cannot be seen, but we feel the effect of the emotions as our chakras process them.

When our emotions are very intense, we feel them physically, our mind springs into action producing more thoughts, sending messages to the endocrine system which creates appropriate hormones in an attempt to keep our body in balance.

Energetically speaking, the more negative the emotion, the more dense or ‘sticky’ that energy is, and like glue it becomes stuck in the chakra centres. Positive emotions are lighter and are processed more quickly and feel more comfortable and light, such as the butterflies in the tummy when we fall in love, or the lightness we feel when experiencing joy. When our emotions severely impact on our energy system, not only do we suffer various hormone imbalance, but our emotions can also become out of kilter.

The sacral chakra is a very common place to experience blocks and disturbances. We may also be more aware of it working alongside other chakras, such as the root chakra when we are nervous, or the heart chakra or solar plexus when we are feeling love, throat chakra if the ‘sick to the stomach’ feeling is linked to something like making a speech. The more we examine our bodies, whether it is physically or energetically we realise how interlinked all our systems are. But if we examine our feelings in detail, with practice we can detect the subtle differences between the feelings and emotions experienced with each chakra. (Talking to a good energy healer can guide you to notice this.)

We looked at the Root Chakra which processes our fear and anxiety resulting in the fight or flight mode. It can be said that the Sacral Chakra is also linked to those emotions of fear and anxiety, but there is a slight difference, the Root Chakra is dealing with the most raw and primitive of emotions that come from a reaction to danger or a threat to survival, whether it is a real danger to life or a danger to our personality being threatened. The Sacral is more about our feelings and emotions connected with fear and anxiety. Particularly if it is to do with our families and loved ones.

Possible Symptoms Connected with Sacral Chakra Imbalance or Blockage

These are just a few examples that may cause imbalances or blockages in that area:

Childhood trauma/abuse

Loss of parent/sibling

Clinging onto loved ones too tightly

Feeling very needy

Marital problems

Promiscuity

Lack of moral boundaries

Rigid personal boundaries

Guilt/Shame

Any problem to do with pro-creation

Relationships – especially with close family

Relationship break-ups

Child custody issues

Imbalance in that area will also impact on our general creativity or motivation, one might feel isolated, anxious or alone, which can impact on our ability to feel sociable and accepted. We may feel guilt or shame for any pleasure we experience. Or guilt and shame regarding actions we have taken in the past. A ‘Can’t be bothered’ feeling or ‘What’s the point’ or over worry about loved ones.

Physically, the result of long-term imbalances can affect our back, pelvic region, our sexuality and any of the internal organs in that general area of the body.

A Healthy and Balanced Sacral Chakra

A well-balanced Sacral centre will result in us feeling emotionally stable, having healthy personal boundaries, feeling creative, motivated and generally comfortable with our own life and trust in our loved one’s ability to look after themselves, even if they make mistakes! (Of course that is as long as they are old enough to be responsible for themselves!).
