Energy Part 2
Human Energy in Simple Terms
Those who are scientifically minded may question much of what I write, however, research is being done regarding the knowledge held by humanity for thousands of years about human energy. If we keep in mind that we once believed something as small as bacteria could never kill us, it might be good for us to keep our minds open about many other subjects. Just because we can’t see something, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there, we just don’t have instruments sensitive enough to measure it yet. However, please keep in mind, that I write from experience, not from proven fact, so always question everything until you experience things for yourself or you get that really strong gut feeling that something is right!
Let’s start with what is already proven:
1. Every living organism is made up of charged particles which makes it subject to the laws of electromagnetism. I am not going to pretend to be an expert in that field, but I understand it is the energy that holds atoms together to create mass and also generates magnetic fields. (If anyone can offer a more accurate but simple layman’s explanation, please do!) (Also see previous post, Energy Part 1 regarding atoms).
2. Our bodies have a bio-electromagnetic field. The energy or frequency of this is very fine in intensity, but it can be measured using very specialised equipment, (I’ll let you do your own research if you are really keen to know more!). As we also learned in the previous post, with practice we can train our own senses to feel this subtle energy.
3. We rarely, if ever, stop to think that every single function of our body relies on electrical signals sent through our nervous system in order for it to work smoothly. It seems incredible that each of our cells knows its purpose and what it needs at any given moment. For example, if cells are damaged, a system of regenerating new one’s kick in and if bacteria invade our body, our immune system comes to the rescue. Electrical messages are constantly pulsating around our bodies communicating the needs of all our cells to keep us in good working order. But, if there is any kind of interference in that electrical circuitry, these messages may not be able to do the job at hand. This much we understand about the physical energy system.
Now here is the bit that cannot be scientifically proven as yet:
The subtle human energy field and its associated parts, such as Chakra’s, Nadi’s, Meridians and the Dantian.
Written records regarding the Chakras and Nadi’s are found in ancient Indian texts called the Vedas. The Dantian and Meridians are based on Ancient Chinese texts. Complementary health practitioners who work with energy are familiar with the concept of Chakras, Nadi’s and Meridians. The Dantian is probably better known by those who practice Martial Arts, as energy storage centres.
Are we subconsciously aware of these energy storage centres? When we feel physically tired, how often do we declare that we need to recharge our batteries? Our minds are very good at speaking in metaphors that turn out to be facts!

What are Chakras?
Descriptions online or in books may define them as a wheel or disc of spinning energy. Recent learning has changed my mind about this because they are also energy exchange systems, so it would make much more sense if we think of them as a toroid to draw energy in and also expel energy out. We have hundreds of chakras around our bodies, but we are most commonly aware of the seven major ones located along a spinal channel or ‘Nadi’, called the Sushumna. (Not that names matter!) The chakras in turn are connected to a network of energy vessels around the body, which we are familiar with calling Meridians. I am sure there is a good crossover of information between Indian and Chinese understanding of our energy systems and of course our own intuition and experience.
Chakras as an energy exchange system:
Trying to keep this subject brief and simple isn’t easy, but let’s start with the idea of chakras possibly being energy exchange systems that connect us to ‘life force’ energy around us. We draw energy in and we expel energy out. It is believed that this could be concurrent with our respiratory breathing. I’m not going to attempt to go into long winded theories or quantum ideas of what that life force energy is, but I’m sure most people have questioned what makes life alive.
As a slight diversion, you may have heard reports about yogis who have lived for many years without eating – they have been studied with great curiosity as they seem to literally survive on ‘fresh air’. There are some people who claim to do the same and call themselves Breatharians. Yes, I can hear the sceptical views, I understand the theory but certainly don’t recommend trying it! However, I do believe this ‘Life Force’ energy, whatever we believe it to be, is equally important to our survival and sense of well-being as a nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle.
Our chakras and energy field as an information and emotional exchange system.
If we pause for a moment to remember that every thought, like every physical action, creates energy, and we are taught that energy, once created is not destroyed. Then imagine if thoughts have their own vibrational frequency or ‘wave’ according to the intent behind them, and all those countless thoughts and ideas of everyone around us (animals too) are out there in this field of energy that surrounds us, maybe even in the ‘space’ that is within all the atoms of air that we breathe or absorb through our chakra system, who knows? It is a thought to wrestle with.
Here are a few more thoughts:
Sometimes we may meet a person and take a dislike to them without apparently knowing anything about them, where are we gaining that information from?
Think about the work of reputable mediums, they can pick up uncannily accurate information about us, where does it come from? Would it surprise you to know that with practice, we can all do the same? We pick up on these vibrational frequencies from each other when our chakra system is working efficiently, then our intuition (which works well when we have an open and balanced brow chakra) can interpret these signals and ‘decode’ them into remarkably accurate thoughts for us. We all do it to a certain extent.
How often do you just ‘know’ something but you can’t explain why? Have you ever had the feeling that the phone is going to ring and it does? Have you ever been thinking of someone and then you unexpectedly meet them? There is no mystery to having a sixth sense, it is just that some people have a more developed one than most.
Just wonder for a moment, is our energy field constantly picking up and translating subtle energy information from all around us? Have you observed animals doing this as well – seeing what we cannot see for example?
How can chakras be emotional regulators?
Pay really close attention the next time you experience a very strong emotion. Where in your body do you feel pure joy, anger, fear, love, excitement, jealousy, hate, grief, anxiety, relief, trust, disgust and so on?
Love and grief are probably the strongest emotions we feel, so it is pretty obvious they are felt most strongly in the region of our heart. Sometimes we will feel emotions in more than one place, for instance you might notice that your throat tightens up because you want to express your anger and you hold it back, but you might also feel it in your stomach at the same time (you cannot stomach something!). Disgust may be in your gut area or your throat, excitement may be felt in the middle just beneath your ribs, there are no hard and fast rules, because we all experience our emotions differently according to our personality. Anger makes some people sad, for others it sparks aggression, so we may sense the same emotion in different parts of our body.
You are actually feeling these emotions in your chakras. If these emotions affect us deeply over a long period of time, or if we cannot process them and let them go, they can potentially cause imbalances or blockages in the energy flow from that chakra.
Our chakras are also bit like an energetic defence system, they close in or contract when we have unpleasant experiences, and open up and expand when we feel all is well in our life, this in turn has an effect on the field of subtle energy around us and can be felt by those who are sensitive enough or even measured by using dowsing. Have you noticed that if you feel anxious, it affects how you feel physically? It may even show in our body language, we round our shoulders, or cross our arms in front of us when we feel out of our comfort zone, we may even take a few steps back from some people. When we are happy and feeling confident, we are much more physically open. We naturally close our energy centres in to avoid picking up energy around us that we don’t like.
Also think about how anger sets us up in a fight or flight state and can result in us feeling quite edgy or jittery for hours. When we feel love, our heart chakra literally opens up and we feel a sense of lightness and love for anything and everything. Intense grief will do the opposite, we feel heavy, closed in, and even real pain, just about every chakra will respond to that as well and our whole energy field will shrink inwards.
Alternatively, some people experience emotions as a colour. There is nothing surprising about this either, colours are frequencies, just as emotions and thoughts are. Those colours may also correspond to the colour that some people can intuitionally see in the chakras.
Last of all, a quick look at ‘Magnetic Energy’ or ‘Law of Attraction’
I can’t conclude a post about our magnetic energy system without touching on this subject.
Our thoughts and emotions are energy, and what we give out tends to attract similar energy back. Have you noticed that if you are the kind of person who utters, “Nothing ever goes right for me!”, then it probably becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy!
We tend to attract people to us who have similar beliefs and interests. If we are grumpy and miserable, then we attract more of the same. If we are nice to everyone, then everyone is generally nice back. If we give a smile, we generally have one returned to us.
In brief, what we focus on, we attract. The energy of our thoughts actually manifest experiences.
People tend to call it ‘The Law of Attraction’.
While the idea of this law of attraction may sound empowering and useful, it is not healthy to go around in a ‘false happy’ state. I think we can all name some people who have projected a persona that is happy and joyful, but they have suffered dreadful depression behind the smiles.
It is really important to acknowledge and fully experience our true emotions, but then let them pass without attaching our identity to them. Observing our emotions, asking ourselves why we are feeling them and learning how to find our way through the emotions that no longer serve us well. Above all, seeking help.
Bereavement and trauma are probably going to be the hardest emotions to get through and the ones that take most time, but it is possible after a while to release the pain each time it occurs by halting the painful self-punishing mind stream of thoughts. We obviously don’t forget though. If we forget how emotions feel, we haven’t learned.
Forgiveness and not blaming others for our feelings is also important. But again, those are big subjects that need addressing separately.
Next time
Next time I will try and write more about the chakras and methods of self-healing. But please, if you read this and feel completely confused, ask me as many questions as you like. If you need help, then please ask.
I apologise for condensing a huge subject into a very small essay!
