Dispelling the Mystery of Healing

As someone who passionately dislikes ‘titles’, being labelled ‘a healer’ sometimes comes very hard. It is generally going to cause a reaction in one of two ways, some people will regard ‘a healer’ as a person who is ‘mystical and gifted’ in an art that isn’t understood by science, they may even regard a healer as someone who can work miracles. Then going to the other extreme, a healer may be regarded as nothing more than a complete charlatan! I won’t deny that some people may fit these categories, especially if they charge a fortune for their services or even worse, give false promises. However, most healers are extremely humble about their services and are very well trained in different healing modalities, enabling them to help their clients to help themselves.

So there you have it, the mystery is dispelled, we enable our clients to help themselves heal. I hasten to add some exceptionally gifted healers can perform apparent miracles, they are out there, but few and far between. We all sometimes experience apparent healing miracles, but the client is the one who allows it to happen. The rest of us realise that in many cases, in order to heal, a person needs to change whatever triggered their health problem in the first place.

Everyone has the potential to heal themselves, we take for granted that cuts and grazes heal, but if you keep picking at a scab or allow it to get dirty, it won’t. The same goes for so many illnesses that are triggered by trauma or emotional problems. It is well known that stress and anxiety weaken our immune system and that can potentially leave us more vulnerable to catching colds and viruses, if that stress is prolonged, it can even lead to more serious illness. So, do we go to the doctors and take drugs, face potential surgery, buy extra supplements to boost our immune system or address whatever is causing the stress? It might be a combination of all of these, and that is the ideal solution, to work with conventional medicine when needed and have the backup of a supportive healing partner so you can help yourself. That healing partner could even be a loved one at home. However, sometimes we don’t want to burden those closest to us with our worries and concerns, and sometimes the person close to you won’t feel able to point out how you can amend or address the emotions that bring on stress and anxiety.

This is where the healer can step in. A good healer is completely non-judgemental and will guard your confidentiality, they will be a very good listener and will sometimes be good at sensing your unspoken emotions as well. A healer won’t advise you what to do, but they will suggest various methods which you may choose to adopt to help yourself. You are very much in charge. An ideal situation is when a healer is consulted before illness strikes, like everything, prevention is always the best option.

Healers may be qualified in Reiki, Energy Healing, Spiritual Healing, Meditation Techniques and even offer extras such as Crystal Healing, Flower Essences, Massage, Neuro Linguistic Programming, Hypnotherapy, Acupressure, Sound therapy, Colour therapy, Psychology, Counselling, Homeopathy, the list can go on and on. It is rare to find a healer who is only qualified in one of the above, for most of us healing is a passion and we never stop learning or training in methods that may help our clients. It might even surprise you that our training sometimes extends well beyond that of your local G.P. Not that any of us would overstep your G.P. as being your first point of call or suggest that any medication or advice they offer should be ignored. If you visit a healer, the first thing they should ask you is whether you have consulted your doctor. It might also surprise you to know that it is possible your doctor may have trained in some form of complementary healing as well.

(Always check that your healer is registered and insured – this will ensure they

are fully trained and have passed relevant assessments or examinations.)

The various methods of ‘Energy Healing’ are often seen as mysterious, misunderstood, or even fearful to some, and because of that healing is brushed off and regarded as nonsense. I will attempt to offer a simple explanation of energy healing in my next post, and maybe offer a few practical techniques to apply to yourself. There is no mystery to anything in life, just a lack of knowledge and maybe a gap or two where science is catching up to understand things like intuition and subtle energy, but progress with that is being made in leaps and bounds.
